Ascension Sunday 2023
Reporting the Ascension of Jesus, Luke reminds us of our calling to be witnesses, to live and tell the story of how things have changed because of Easter. Luke is aware that on this side of Easter, the world is different. In raising Jesus from the dead God has said “yes” to the way of Christ, “yes” to the ways he served, and loved, and forgave, and reconciled, and made peace, and crossed boundaries, and welcomed and affirmed all. Easter is the good news that there is a different and better way to be human, and that good news demands a bold witness, not a whimper, not a half-hearted appeal, not a luke-warm endorsement. Easter demands a bold, humble witness to the good news that in Jesus Christ God has overcome the power of sin and death and has set us free to live and love in ways that offer hope and life and that make a difference in the world.
