Our History

UWF was started in 1869 by just 8 women who banded together to provide desperately needed medical aid and education to women and girls in poverty in India. For more than 150 years, UWF has worked tirelessly for justice through compassionate service and advocacy to change unfair policies and systems that harm women, children and youth—from racial and gender injustice to economic inequality, climate issues and more.

Today, UWF has grown to nearly half a million members, all with the same commitment to show up and get things done.
