The Sixth Sunday of Easter 2023

The DUMC mission statement is one way we talk about discipleship and what it means to follow Christ together as a community of faith.  We say it together each week at the end of the liturgy before the gathered Church once again departs to become the scattered church, loving God and neighbor in all the places we live, work, learn, and play.  A couple of weeks ago, I pointed out that our mission statement echoes the practice of the first disciples, who gathered weekly to learn from the teaching of the apostles, for fellowship and the breaking of bread, and for prayer.  And then, they too would depart to live and love as Christ in their communities.  So, each week we say, that we will be the body of Christ in our community through worship, prayer, the breaking of bread at the Lord’s table, through education and formation, and through fellowship, and service.  In this way we disciples, deepen our love for God and one another and then depart to love our neighbors in ways that are transformative and that offer hope.  In this way we keep Christ’s commandment to love.
