The Fourth Sunday of Lent 2023

The Pharisees believed they saw everything clearly – God, the world around them, who is in and who is out, who is worthy of God’s love and welcome and who is not.  They believed they had perfect vision.  And they enforced that certainty with a religious legalism that made it impossible for them to see the kingdom of God, heaven on earth, unfolding right in front of their eyes in the healing of a man born blind.  The sad thing is, at times, we do this too. Too often, even in the Church, we huddle in our circles of certainty, confident that our circle is right and God is with us.  But then Jesus comes along and does something that calls all of that into question, blows open the doors of our imagination, of what God is like and what is possible, corrects our vision and enables us to see what is possible when we trust and follow him.
