A BRIEF HISTORY OF DUMC
Davidson United Methodist Church began as a mission church, started by the pastor and congregation of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Cornelius. The congregation was formed in 1906 with 99 members from Mt. Zion. The first church building (the current Chapel) was dedicated in 1908, and its cost of $1,500 was funded by the founding members.
By 1910, the congregation had grown to 160 members. The church was part of a circuit and shared the services of a pastor with one or two other churches in the area.
Additions for classrooms and renovations of the Sanctuary continued through the 1940s.
DUMC remained a circuit church until it could support a full-time pastor, which occurred in 1951. By 1955, the congregation had outgrown the existing structure. On September 4, 1960, the entire congregation marched up and across the street to their new sanctuary (now used as the Fellowship Hall).
The congregation continued to grow and in 1979, an education wing and choir facilities were added to the 1960 building.
Membership exceeded 500 in 1990 and the membership decided it was time to build a new sanctuary. Ground breaking for our current Sanctuary was started in 1993; the first worship service was conducted in 1994.
The 25,500 square foot Alexander Education Building was completed in 1998.
With worship services offered at 8:15, 9:30, and 11:00 a.m., about 1,200 adults and children currently worship each Sunday at DUMC.
